History of Numerology

The history of numerology may well be lost in antiquity with no definite answer as to where it really originated. The majority of numerologists believe that Egypt and Babylon could be the source as many ancient manuscripts point to these. It was also here that the 'Chaldean' system was developed under the influence of the Hebrews.

It is also recognized that some form of numerology was being used in ancient China, Rome, Japan and Greece. However the credit for laying out a framework for numerology, is most often given to the Greek philosopher Pythagoras.

Pythagoras though a mathematician was very much interested in the concepts or principles behind the mathematics. He felt that the there is a relation between entire universe and numbers, and created a system for this that was then further expanded by other Greek philosophers. Pythagoras is often credited with being the father of numerology as his theories took it to a different level.

In the modern times Dr. Julia Stenton is credited both with raising awareness of Numerology and also with giving the name "Numerology" to the Science of Names and Numbers. Today numerology is enjoying a resurgence in popularity, it is most often used to discover secret meanings and to help predict the future.
